FREE Greg Loftus EP download!

In Albums, Artists on October 29, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Our small little label used to be even smaller. The initial release from BIG BULLET RECORDS was actually a re-release of sorts—we helped Massachusetts singer-songwriter Greg Loftus push his fantastic album No Taking Prisoners Tonight and did our best to make folks pay attention to it.

Since then both BIG BULLET RECORDS and Greg Loftus have come a long way. Greg had a brief, yet productive stint last year with a full-band behind him, which he called Splinters & Sparrows. The gang recorded a phenomenal full-length (which you can read a full review of here) before disbanding somewhat. We were so happy with the quality of these songs that we simply cannot allow them to slip beneath the radar. Some of them have been up on Greg’s Myspace for a while now, and five choice cuts were assembled into a tour EP entitled Heathens In Disguise that could be picked up at Greg’s live shows. Now BIG BULLET RECORDS and Greg Loftus would like for you to have that EP and we don’t want you to pay a dime for it. Simply click the album cover below and you will be directed to your free download of Heathens In Disguise by Greg Loftus. Enjoy.

Photobucket

Spilling your heart out countless nights on the road certainly takes its toll, and Greg Loftus knows this all too well. Since his solo debut No Taking Prisoners Tonight, Loftus has been playing the East Coast at a frenetic pace, picking up inspiration for new songs every step of the way. Whereas his previous album captures a headstrong, yet emotionally conscious young Loftus, Heathens In Disguise finds the songwriter grappling with maturity and weightier issues: “Three a.m. again and it might be enough/I know of a bed with my name on it/Yeah I’ve got those friends that keep fucking up/But the blood’s never on their hands/So I lay my head and fall back to sleep again.”

Don’t worry though, Loftus can never fully abandon his rowdy beginnings, and spots of it still shine through brilliantly here. Loftus has just grown to accept that for every reckless, party-filled night on the road there is an equally quiet and somewhat lonesome one, and that is something that we all have to learn to face in due time. Let’s just hope we can all relay the story as articulate and meaningful as Greg has.

BIG BULLET RECORDS Official Press Release – September 29, 2009

On Tuesday, September 29, 2009 BIG BULLET RECORDS will be releasing the new Dandelion Snow album entitled “It’s Just A Bad Dream”. The album will be available in three mediums: a FREE online download will be available through BIG BULLET RECORDS and Dandelion Snow, advanced copies will be available at shows for a small donation during the current Dandelion Snow tour, and the completely packaged physical copies will be available for a very reasonable price.

We at BIG BULLET RECORDS are extremely proud of the new Dandelion Snow album. “It’s Just A Bad Dream” truly has something for everyone. Roger Harvey’s definitive and ever-evolving songwriting shines on this album. We like it so much that we are offering it as a free online download. This way the music can get into the hands of the people that matter—you. Thank you for your continued support in all of our endeavors. We will continue to bring you affordable, quality independent music.

Roger Harvey of Dandelion Snow wrote the following, and we feel like Roger has perfectly summed up the way that both Dandelion Snow and BIG BULLET RECORDS feel about “It’s Just A Bad Dream” and music in general:

“Music has been the backbone of my life since I was young, traveling with bands, and listening to my favorite records in my parents basement. In today’s subculture the questions of value regarding the arts is constantly being redefined, as an accessibility to free downloads, bit-torrent sites, and donations-based sales have re-evaluated the ancient idealism of the record collector. The appreciation for physical copies of an album is many times compromised to the convenience of portable mp3 player’s. It takes one to know one.

The independent music community has been left in a transitional period, with smaller acts struggling harder than ever to get a dedicated fan base and label support. The concept of overall worth has perceptually declined due to a cultural obsession with money. I have noticed when distributing records at shows that when I am giving away records for free, when the room clears out the floor will be littered with the albums. The same albums that at another show I have sold for 4-5 dollars and have received emails from those fans describing how much the album has meant to them. The biggest predicament concerning value in this culture is the fixation on monetary value replacing all forms of value. It seems that the as music’s monetary value declines, the overall value & appreciation of music as art is also defaced. The question of the turn around value of this album, in which countless friends and myself have invested unimaginable amounts of time, creative energy, and money into, has been, as usual, not open for discussion. We have stuck to our ideals of getting this album in to your hands, whether you can afford a hard copy or not—whether, you want something to add to your collection, or just something to drop on your iPod.

Myself along with Big Bullet Records have done lots of brainstorming on the best way for us to approach this release from the perspective of myself, as part of an independent band, and from the perspective of Big Bullet Records, as an independent label. We have agreed to release this record in three forms prior to the upcoming tour. We will have the hardcopy pressings of which we will sell as cheaply as possible (we promise), we will have a bit less elaborate pressings of which will be available at all the shows for a donation of your choice, and we will have free downloads of the album available online on the release date of September 29th through Big Bullet Records.

We worked hard to make this album come to life and both the time and money invested is not coming back nor do we want it back. All we want is for everyone interested to be able to have access to our album, free of charge, donation-based physical copies and downloads, and/or for the record collectors as a physical release. There are lots of ways to value and appreciate something separate from monetarily, we value, appreciate, & care a whole lot about independent music, so when you download this record please remember to place value on ours as well, however you see fit, it takes all kinds.

- Roger, Dandelion Snow

“It’s Just A Bad Dream” will be available online and on tour starting September 29th,2009.”

In response to recent rumors regarding an alleged dispute between The Shepherd University Picket and BIG BULLET RECORDS, the label has issued this official statement:

“We here at BIG BULLET RECORDS believe that creating a nurturing environment for local arts is absolutely integral to the advancement of these local arts and the artists who are responsible for them. BIG BULLET RECORDS has existed since May of 2008, and during our short existence we have strived to create strong and mutual bonds with local press, businesses, and community groups and members.

Perhaps the largest entity in our community is Shepherd University, home to over 5,000 students. Many members of our label, including countless artists, are currently, or have at some time been students at Shepherd University. We feel that the student publication, The Shepherd University Picket, has been fair in its coverage of our artists during our short tenure in the community. Rumors concerning a recent ‘boycott’ or ‘ban’ against our label and/or artists are inconclusive, and BIG BULLET RECORDS respects the Picket’s Editor-in-Chief’s official statements that were recently made in the online portion of The Shepherdstown Chronicle. In fact, the Editor-in-Chief was even quoted as saying, “…I was unaware that a record label even existed in Shepherdstown.’ The Editor-in-Chief also made it clear that The Picket encourages local musicians to take an active role in making the press aware of upcoming concerts and events.

In response to these statements, BIG BULLET RECORDS would like to also encourage local musicians, whether they are directly affiliated with our label or not, to alert local press about their shows and events. If local coverage is a concern for you as an artist, then do everything that you can to get the details out there, that’s all that anyone can ask you to do. We also want to let it be known that BIG BULLET RECORDS will continue to work on creating and maintaining healthy and productive working relationships with all local, regional, and national press outlets—our artists have received press attention as far as Massachusetts, Oregon, New York, and even Denmark, but it remains imperative for us to maintain these positive relationships in our hometown. We also want to express our continued support of all local music, even that which is not directly affiliated with our label. Shepherdstown and its surrounding areas has a multitude of creative potential, and we will continue to do everything that we can to help everyone realize this potential. We want to thank our fans and artists for their continued support—you are what keeps us going, so thank you, and we hope you are all enjoying the free inaugural compilation.”

Rave reviews for “We Are Bound” by Stephen MacDonald & The Okay Win!

In Albums, Artists on August 16, 2009 at 8:03 pm

The first two album reviews for the upcoming Stephen MacDonald & The Okay Win record We Are Bound are out now!

The first is from the Plymouth, Massachusetts based Take Me To Your Music blog:

Stephen MacDonald and the Okay Win We Are Bound (Big Bullet Records)

To those who bemoaned Radiohead’s transition from OK Computer to Kid A and Wilco’s shape-shifting on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, clearly do not like change. Stephen MacDonald went the folk, singer-songwriter solo route for a couple years but now brought in a band and moved to a more of an Americana sound. Together, MacDonald, Matt Jones (drums), Ryan Ward (bass), and JM Craven (guitar/backing vocals), who all met at Westfield State College, have come together as Stephen MacDonald and The Okay Win. A seamless transition from solo to full band, combined with the poetic lyrics that gave MacDonald his own identity, make for an excellent record. We Are Bound begins with the Tom Petty meets Conor Oberst at Asbury Park and runs into Bruce Springsteen roots rocker “Could Gamble.” MacDonald doesn’t completely abandon his early workings, particularly on the acoustic solo track, “Smoke Signal,” where he sings, “Oh, you’ve got to be braver.” Take his advice. Be brave and embrace this album, one that turned into a classic transition from the old to the new.” – Ryan Wood

 Rating: 8.6 out of 10

The second comes from IndieShows.net:

“You know that guy Bob Dylan or maybe you know Neil Young? Well, Stephen MacDonald & The Okay Win may not sound exactly like these guys, but that’s because they are the new face of folk indie rock. I’d put it in the same vicinity as these guys but with an updated feel to it. The music is pure, without a lot of effects, and it’s like a breath of fresh air. I picture myself traveling down a highway across country listening to “Gone For Good”. The cool thing about this music is I can listen to it while surfing the web, driving down the highway or while taking a nap. It’s multi-purpose music!

“Gone For Good” is off of the band’s new album called “We Are Bound” and I happen to be listening to it right now. The track after “Gone For Good” is called “In Spit” and it has a few nice parts to it. First the percussion, it starts off with a great drum beat. That beat moves into an uptempo bass line and this bass line and drum beat make the song. But, the lyrics are also good… “You only want what you gotta fix…”, “You only want what you can’t get…”, “You only want it once it’s gone.”

This is an all around solid album. It’s got a few upbeat, more Rock tracks, then the second half of the album is mostly just an acoustic guitar and vocals. My favorite pure acoustic track on the album is called “Smoke Signal”. The melody is great and the lyrics tell a story which I didn’t hear the first time I listened… but it talks about someone calling 911 to report that a man is outside of a neighbor/friend’s house and an argument of some type seems to be going on. That’s at least the first impression I got… maybe if I listen to it a few more times I’d figure out what’s going on… Anyway, there aren’t enough story tellers out there in the music industry today, so this is refreshing.

When you’re in the mood for solid songwriting and laid back music, try Stephen MacDonald & The Okay Win. It’s fresh, smart and eloquent. This is also one of the top albums I’ve heard this year. I don’t do any kind of a “top albums of ‘09″ blog here usually, but if I did, this album would be on my list.”

The New Year

In Uncategorized on January 2, 2009 at 6:46 am

Happy New Year to each and every one of you! It is our first New Year as a label (we’re not even a year old yet), and we’ve got plenty of plans for 2009. Let’s give some general updates first.

The Demon Beat’s West Virginia tour was a huge success. They are quickly becoming one of the state’s most exciting bands and people are taking notice — be sure to check out all of the new press on them in our PRESS section. WVRockscene (arguably the best WV music site/blog) has named “Trainwreck” by The Demon Beat as one of their top 10 songs of 2008

Greg Loftus was recently interviewed by Jezz Harkin of Breakthru Radio and is currently working on a new record.

Tucker Riggleman has been playing with a backing band called Planned Parenthood. Be sure to check out the videos on his page.

The Resonators have been busy playing shows and are working on an EP in the very near future.

As for 2009, expect our compilation called TERMINAL BALLISTICS Vol. 1 very early in the year. We also have other big things in the works including some possible festival appearances.

That’s all for right now. We hope you all had a safe holiday season and we wish you the best in the new year.

Stay true,

BBR

BBR Welcomes Roma Renegade

Roma Renegade

Roma Renegade

BIG BULLET RECORDS is proud to announce the addition of Roma Renegade to our line-up!

Combining elements of gypsy folk, swing, punk and cabaret, Roma Renegade have found a style all their own. At first glance, the minimal instrumentation of acoustic guitar, drums, and accordion might lead one to believe that these siblings are creating easy-listening music. Wrong. Roma Renegade is one of the loudest bands you will ever hear live, and their energy is unparalleled, even amongst rock groups.

Jonathan Slick’s vivacious drumming anchors the trio, while Bethany Slick’s elegant strumming gives the songs direction. The songs are brought to fruition by the unique melodies of Gabrielle Slick and her accordion.

Roma Renegade’s debut full-length album, entitled “Lungo Drom Svatura”, is due out later this Fall on BIG BULLET RECORDS. You can catch them on September 6th at Jumpin’ Java in Charles Town, WV as they perform during the BIG BULLET RECORDS Showcase.

As we here at BIG BULLET begin the process of moving into our new home base and setting up our studio, we can look back and be proud of what we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time already. Being not even 2 months old, BIG BULLET RECORDS has already established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, and we intend to grow and grow and grow.

Once we become settled into our new house and have everything up and running, we can begin to really flourish. We will begin work on our very first BIG BULLET RECORDS Compilation CD, which we will use as a strong promotional tool to spread the word about both BBR and our wonderful artists. Work has also begun on compiling over a year’s worth (and still growing) of video footage into a snazzy DVD Compilation. Work will also begin on Jude Universer’s long awaited full-band record, the debut album from The Resonators, the debut album from Tucker Riggleman, and a brand new full-length from The Demon Beat.

These are just a few of the things we have in store for your patient ears, eyes, and hearts.

Once the early Fall comes around, we will be orchestrating and promoting huge CD release shows for the new E.P. from The Demon Beat, the debut album from As All Things End, as well as Roma Renegade’s debut full-length. Combine all of this with numerous shows in the Shepherdstown area as well as the rest of the East Coast, and it’s easy to see that we have our hands full, but hey, we like it that way.

At this time we’d like to introduce some new blood that has recently joined up with the BIG BULLET RECORDS family:

    Lynn Kemper – Graphic Artist
    Rachel Molenda – Photography

As well as many other people who have offered their promotional skills such as Angie, Jeff, Jerry and Charles.

Our extreme thanks goes out to any and all of you who have had kind words to say or offered your services in any way possible.

    Stay true, and thank you…seriously,

    BBR

    Early Summer Updates

In Uncategorized on June 3, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Things are certainly heating up here at the BIG BULLET RECORDS camp.

There are plenty of upcoming shows going on right now, including a tour by Greg Loftus, so be sure to check those out if you happen to be in the area.

As far as records go, you can still order “No Taking Prisoners Tonight” by Greg Loftus. The new E.P. from The Demon Beat is getting the final mastering treatment from Saff Studios in Chicago, so expect a late summer/early fall release date.

Things are slow but steady right now, but by the end of the summer we will have our studio set up as well as a permanent home base of operations.

    Keep listening and stay true,

    BBR Management

    The Dreadful Horoscope

In Uncategorized on May 7, 2008 at 11:43 pm

    The Dreadful Horoscope

Armed with a resonator guitar and haunting vocals, The Dreadful Horoscope may just be the cure-all folk remedy for an effectively messed up world.

Boasting an arsenal of darkly imagined songs, The Dreadful Horoscope mixes lofty folk sensibilities with stark political commentary. Being a West Virginia native (just like BIG BULLET RECORDS) has obviously inspired TDH to write intensely articulated lyrical protests against Mountain Top Removal, which is a serious issue throughout Appalachia in general, not just West Virginia. But enough political ranting from us, TDH does a much better job, while putting it to great music in the process.

    Khaos Kloud

    Khaos Kloud

The truth is, most hip-hop and rap takes itself too seriously these days. People rapping about the streets and East Coast vs. West Coast – all of it comes across too harsh.

But don’t worry, Khaos Kloud has swooped in like a vivacious falcon. A hip-hop falcon. With a violent craving for fast food.

The boys of Khaos Kloud (Juice Chill, Piece Frawg, Big Kitten, Trigger Pappy and the Rhyme-a-cologist) haven’t been around for too long, but their foray into the music world has been making heads spin like clockwork.

Not only do they create their beats from scratch, but they incorporate live guitar, bass, and synth into their performances. In what was considered only their second ever official show, Khaos Kloud had the opportunity to open for legendary reggae band The Wailers. The response was overwhelming as the band’s performance became a theatrical event involving aliens, dance contests, and intergalactic robots.

Keep a look out for these hip vocabulary slayers as they plan to release their record “Smoove” in the coming year.

    Greg Loftus

    Greg Loftus

Displaying the fine craftsmanship of alt-country songwriting, Loftus delivers something that sounds as American as any Springsteen album you’ve ever heard, while bringing something entirely its own to the table. Picture the lyrical prowess of Cory Branan infused with the raw energy and punk sensibility of bands like Lucero and Drag The River.

No Taking Prisoners Tonight” is an incredibly solid debut effort that is sure to turn heads in the alt-country/folk scene. The full band arrangements allow Greg’s acoustic driven songs to flourish into dirty rocking romps that would fit in at any rowdy country bar.

    As All Things End

    As All Things End

What happens when a bunch of metal kids watch too many zombie movies and buy really loud amps? The answer to that ridiculous question is As All Things End.

These metal-obsessed intellectuals may be just beginning, but they are no amateurs. The drums sound like an air strike during a thunderstorm, the bass paces along like a freight train with a bomb strapped to it, and the guitars shred and squeal like a metalhead zombie on speed.

Exaggerated? Maybe a little. Awesome? Absolutely.

As All Things End incorporate traditional metal rippage with catchy as hell riffs and harmonies. When we say the harmonies are sweet, we mean the harmonies are SWEET. If you are a fan of metal, hardcore or volume in general, do yourself a favor and go see AATE in concert.

Dethklok wishes they were this band.

    Cait O'Shea

    Cait O’Shea

Miss O’Shea might be young, but she writes with the confidence and literacy of someone in their late 20’s. Her songs scream folk minimalism, yet her lyrics are rich with intelligent metaphors and situations.

Cait O’Shea is a girl with a guitar (and sometimes uke or keys) who writes good songs, and she aims to keep it that way.

    Jude Universer

    Jude Universer

Jude Universer is the definition of musical originality. With timeless pop sensibility and a deadly predilection for synth lines, Universer has quietly released several underground gems throughout the years. His background can become a bit complicated however, so I’ll let him do the talking:

    My story’s a long one.

    Pull up a chair.

I was born in 1972, but not the year with which most of you are familiar. You see, I am from what scientists call an “alternate dimension.” To put it in more simplistic terms, my timeline railroad runs parallel to yours.

That is to say, RAN parallel.

Here’s the deal. I was/am an officer of the law…and a damn good one! Never lost a perp. Nevertheless, yours truly was successfully existing in “alternate” 1994 when I was assigned a special top-secret operation. Not that any of that matters now. So, I’ll let you in on the secret.

I was sent back in time to the middle ages. This is where things get complicated. In being transported through the paper-thin fabric of space and time, I was subsequently dropped into the middle ages…of a DIFFERENT timeline [i.e.- yours]

Now, my mission was to stop an evil dragon from destroying a distant ancestor of mine who happened to be a princess, in her prime. No problem there. Mission accomplished. However, due to technical difficulties, I am now stuck in the alternate [your] timeline.

Armed with only a Stratocaster that is equipped to shoot photon lasers and a large-supply of immortality pills, I have been forced to rock my way through the ages, passed 1994, into what is now 2008…YOUR time.

I’ve seen a lot. I’ve done A LOT more. I’ve been here, there, and everywhere. I’ve toured with the greatest, partied with the best. I’ve heard it all. Law enforcement is my life, but Rock & Roll is my only love. And she’s a tough bride to bear, believe me.

Now, all I have are the recordings I’ve done, and I figure there’s no better time to share them than the present [future].

    The Mary Celeste

    The Mary Celeste

Singer-songwriter Paul Kessler has some shit to get off of his chest – and thanks to lead guitarist Brian Scott, he is able to do just that.

Paul’s passionate song-writing is virtually unparalleled these days. He is that kind of musician who makes every single hair on your body stand on end when he sings. Kessler’s heart-wrenching delivery is matched in intensity only by the lead skills of guitarist Brian Scott. Scott is one of those guitarists who can take a great song and make it an exceptional song. His fluent picking and uncanny sense of melody allow Kessler’s songs to flourish.

The Mary Celeste represent the ideal musical pairing: a gifted song-writer who sings with every ounce of his being, and a unique lead guitarist who gives those songs the breath and texture that they need to come alive.

    The Resonators

After the smoke stirred up by The LaCara Crash had settled, Andrew LaCara was left standing with his Telecaster firmly in hand.

Using this and many other interesting tools (including a drum machine operator by the name of Jude Universer), Andrew began crafting another round of blisteringly infectious rock songs. Whereas The LaCara Crash delved into conceptual pop/rock mastery, The Resonators have dedicated themselves to unrelenting overdrive and hooks of Weezer-esque stature.

Andrew made us think with The LaCara Crash, and now he just wants to make us dance. A lot.

    The Demon Beat

    The Demon Beat

From deep between the hushed hilltops of West Virginia, comes a rag-tag trio of sharply dressed men with a predilection for volume and a passion for Rock & Roll. The Demon Beat have been busy making craters in local bars, clubs, and basements- blowing minds and resurrecting a brand of musical honesty and aural aggression that has lain dormant for decades. “I thought people forgot how to play Rock & Roll.” -a sound guy at a barn (in reference to the Demon Beat’s performance.) The Demon Beat deliver a refreshingly taut mix of Jordan Hudkins’ boisterous rhythms, the tenacious assault of Tucker Riggleman’s gut-pummeling basslines, and the scathingly acerbic, yet thick and mellow guitar work of Adam Meisterhans- who delivers his vocals with the dry wit and literary prowess of a second-year English studies drop-out.
